Traditional Summer Kirmes in the Hunsrück village of Schneppenbach in the Kirner Land region
The Kirmes Schneppenbach is the traditional summer Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the small Hunsrück village of Schneppenbach on the edge of the Soonwald forest. Over a weekend in June, residents celebrate the Kerb (festival) together with guests from the surrounding villages and the town of Kirn in the old tradition: Frühschoppen (morning pint), live music, catering, and activities for the whole family are on the festival calendar.
Like many Kirmes festivals in the region, the tradition dates back to the old church consecration festival of the patron saint, but has evolved over time into a popular folk summer festival. The local clubs – the Kirmesverein (festival association), Sportverein (sports club), Freiwillige Feuerwehr (volunteer fire department), and Heimatverein (heritage society) – organize the festival together and ensure a warm atmosphere in the village.
Schneppenbach is located about eight kilometers north of Kirn, at the transition from the Nahe valley to the Soonwald forest. With around 350 inhabitants, it is one of the smaller municipalities in the Kirner Land collective municipality. Its location between wooded hills, meadows, and small stream valleys makes it a quiet, nature-oriented place to live and an ideal starting point for hikes on the Soonwaldsteig trail.
The village Kirmes festivals of the Kirner Land collective municipality are among the oldest and most vibrant traditions in the region. Each municipality has its own Kerb, often falling on the feast day of the local patron saint, and celebrates it for one to three days with catering, dancing, Frühschoppen, and cultural programs. The Kirmes Schneppenbach is part of this tradition and a firm fixture in the June event calendar.
The Kirmes in Schneppenbach is organized jointly by the local clubs. The sports club often acts as the main caterer, the volunteer fire department handles setup and safety, and the heritage and beautification society manages decorations and the program. This community club structure is typical of village life in the Nahe region and makes such festivals intergenerational community events.
A packed program is spread across the festival Saturday and Sunday: dancing and live music on Saturday evening, Frühschoppen with a brass band on Sunday morning, a communal lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon, and a relaxed conclusion on Sunday evening. Beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and hearty specialties are available throughout.
The Kirmes Schneppenbach 2026 will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June in the village center. It is organized by the local clubs of the Schneppenbach municipality. Free admission. The exact program will be announced a few weeks before the date via the event page of the Kirner Land collective municipality.
