Kirmes and Lustiges Prümtal from September 6th to 8th, 2026 in Waxweiler – traditional village festival "Unter der Kastanie" on the first Sunday of September in the Eifel.
The Kirmes and "Lustiges Prümtal" is the traditional village festival of the municipality of Waxweiler in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm. It takes place annually on the first Sunday in September and is connected to the surrounding public holidays over the weekend – in 2026 from Sunday, September 6th to Tuesday, September 8th.
The venue is the traditional festival grounds "Unter der Kastanie" in the center of Waxweiler – a central location with the distinctive chestnut tree that gave the square its name. Additionally, the Dechant-Faber-Haus, the local community center, serves for covered program items and in case of bad weather.
The name "Lustiges Prümtal" (Merry Prümtal) refers to Waxweiler's location in the valley of the Prüm, one of the most important Eifel rivers, and to the cheerful, convivial character of the festival. The name says it all: music, dance, socialising, and folk traditions characterize the weekend. Local music clubs and cover bands provide the musical entertainment; the local clubs handle the catering.
Unlike the Palatinate Kerwen with their distinct Kerweborsch customs, the Eifel Kirmes has its own character, which is more shaped by folk festival tradition and church patronal feasts. The festival service, morning pint (Frühschoppen), festive parade, and evening festival activities form the classic elements.
Waxweiler, with its approximately 1,000 inhabitants, thrives on community spirit and the commitment of local clubs. The Kirmes is the social highlight of the year, which has endured across generations and is constantly renewed with new accents. Together with the Eifel Marathon in June and Oktoberfest on October 3rd, it forms the annual event framework.
The 2026 Kirmes continues the annual tradition on the first weekend of September. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
