Traditional village fair in Buchholz in the Westerwald for three days at the end of July with a festival tent, family program, and church service
Buchholz (Westerwald) is a small community in the south of the Altenkirchen district, within the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld collective municipality. Despite its manageable size, the community maintains a lively club structure, in which the parish, the rifle association, the fire department, and the sports clubs play a central role. The annual Kirmes is one of the most important dates in the village calendar.
The Kirmes has its origins in the Catholic custom of the Kirchweih celebration—the annual commemoration of the consecration of the local parish church. In the Westerwald and Eifel regions, the Kirmes is a traditional village festival that often begins with a festive church service and extends over several days. Festival tent operations, music bands, family programs, and convivial evenings characterize the schedule.
The Buchholz Kirmes will take place in 2026 from Friday, July 25th, to Sunday, July 27th—on the last weekend of July. This timing positions the Kirmes in the typical summer festival season, when the weather is usually stable and the outdoor festival tent becomes an attraction.
A special feature of the Buchholz Kirmes is its joint sponsorship by the parish and the local community of Buchholz. This cooperation combines the religious-traditional character of the Kirchweih celebration with the convivial folk festival element and ensures that both aspects are equally represented.
The opening on Friday evening features the inauguration with a festive evening, often with live music or a DJ set in the festival tent. Saturday brings the main program with family activities during the day and a dance evening in the evening. Sunday begins with the festive church service for the Kirchweih, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen), a family program, and winding down on Sunday evening.
The Kirmes Buchholz is an expression of a vibrant village community that cherishes its traditions and passes them on to new generations. The clubs work voluntarily in the preparation and execution, and the proceeds of the festival often benefit charitable causes or club and parish work.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizers in the spring. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Opening of the Kirmes at the festival grounds by the parish and local community of Buchholz. Festival tent kickoff with live music or DJ set, catering with sausages and beer. First rides on the amusement attractions, convivial atmosphere until late in the evening.
During the day, a family program with small amusement rides, children's games, catering, and social gatherings. In the evening, a dance night in the festival tent with live music or DJ set, lively atmosphere until late into the night.
In the morning, a festive church service for the Kirchweih in the Catholic parish church of Buchholz with liturgical accompaniment. Followed by a procession or direct transition to the festival grounds. Morning pint (Frühschoppen) with catering. Lunch and family activities at midday. Afternoon coffee and cake, winding down in the late afternoon or evening.
The detailed 2026 program will be published shortly before the event on the pages of the Buchholz community: buchholz-westerwald.de.
