Village Kirmes in the Hochwald
The Kirmes Bierfeld is the annual village kirmes in Bierfeld, a district of Nonnweiler, located on the edge of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park in the St. Wendel district. It traditionally takes place in mid-August — four days of Volksfest (village fair) in a Hochwald village with fewer than 800 inhabitants.
Four Days of Club Culture
The kirmes opens on Wednesday evening with a beer tapping ceremony. On Friday and Saturday, bands play in the festival tent, and Sunday features Frühschoppen (morning pint) with brass music. Children will find their world among the carousels and showman's stalls on the festival grounds, while adults meet for a beer or homemade cake on Sunday afternoon.
Bierfeld in the Hochwald
With just under 800 inhabitants, Bierfeld is one of the smaller districts of Nonnweiler. Its location in the Schwarzwälder Hochwald makes the village a popular starting point for hikes — the Bostalsee, the largest reservoir in Saarland, is only a few kilometres away, as is the Celtic Hunnenring near Otzenhausen.
Saarland Village Kirmes Culture
What makes the Bierfeld Kirmes (like many small kirmessen in the St. Wendel region) special is the mix of a classic Volksfest (village fair) programme and a distinct club culture. It demonstrates how closely the village community, parish, fire brigade, and sports club work together to shoulder the festival annually — a Saarland strength that is rarely found in other German states.
