Traditional Franconian Kirchweih in the Aischgrund
The Kirchweih, often pronounced "Kerwa" in Franconia, is the most important village festival of the year. In Sugenheim, a market town in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, the Kirchweih has been celebrated for generations with all its traditions: church service, festival tent operation, dancing, and music from local clubs.
It is remarkable that Sugenheim and its districts spread their Kirchweihen over several weekends in autumn. The main community celebrates in September, while Krassolzheim, Neundorf, Deutenheim, Ezelheim, and Krautostheim have their own dates in September and October. Anyone travelling through the Sugenheim region in autumn can visit a Kirchweih almost every weekend.
Sugenheim itself is also known for its castle, which regularly hosts concert series with its orangery. The combination of village Kirchweih, regional cuisine – Aischgrund carp, Franconian sausages, Bocksbeutel wine – and cultural background makes Sugenheim an attractive destination in autumn.
The district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim is one of the Kirchweih strongholds of Middle Franconia. In Sugenheim and its surroundings alone, there are nearly a dozen Kirchweihen annually, some celebrated with a parade, some with dance evenings, and some with traditional customs such as the erection of the Kerwabaum (Kirchweih tree).
The Sugenheim main Kirchweih will be celebrated in 2026 on Sunday, September 20. As is customary in the Aischgrund, a festive church service marks the beginning; afterwards, the celebration continues in the festival tent and local inns, with Franconian brass band music and regional cuisine.
The districts of Sugenheim each have their own Kirchweih dates in 2026: Krassolzheim (13.09.), Neundorf (27.09.), Deutenheim (11.10.), Ezelheim and Krautostheim (both 25.10.). The overview comes from the official Kirchweih overview of the Neustadt a.d. Aisch-Bad Windsheim district office.
The exact program per district – parade, dance evening, morning pint – is organized by the respective Kirchweih societies.
Admission to the Kirchweihen is free. Food and drinks on site at Franconian inn prices.
By car via the A 7 (exit Uffenheim or Bad Windsheim) and regional roads. By train to Neustadt an der Aisch, then by bus.
Admission to the Kirchweih is free. Food and drinks are served at Franconian prices.
The dates of the district Kirchweihen in autumn are all different – ideal for a tour through Sugenheim's districts.
