Middle Franconian Kirchweih on the 3rd Sunday in September
The Herrieder Kirchweih is, alongside Carnival and the Stadtfest, one of the most important dates in the Herrieden event calendar. It combines ecclesiastical-religious tradition with a folk festival character: a format that has been lost in many other Bavarian towns, but is kept alive in Herrieden as an ecumenically supported city celebration.
Characteristic of Herrieden is the ecumenical opening: on Friday afternoon, representatives of the Catholic and Protestant church communities jointly open the festival in the Bürgerpark. A tradition that makes the interdenominational coexistence of the town visible. On Sunday morning, the festival service follows in the Christuskirche.
The Kirchweih offers four days of festivities with an extensive program:
Herrieden, a town with around 7,700 inhabitants in the Ansbach district, is one of the oldest towns in Middle Franconia (documented mention in 888). The historic old town with its city walls, collegiate church of St. Vitus, and old city gate forms an impressive backdrop. The Kirchweih primarily uses the Bürgerpark behind the city palace and complements the town center with amusement rides.
The 2026 Kirchweih falls on the weekend of the 3rd Sunday in September. The format includes four days of festivities from Friday to Tuesday with a clearly structured program: ecumenical opening, festival tent program, festival service, and festival parade.
Friday, September 19th at 5:30 PM: Ecumenical opening service by both church communities in the Bürgerpark. Afterwards, the amusement rides and the festival tent open.
Sunday, September 21st at 10:00 AM: Festival service in the Christuskirche. Afterwards, Frühschoppen with the mayor and city council, festival parade of the clubs through the town center to the Bürgerpark. Afternoon: family program, live concert, children's activities.
Bürgerpark Herrieden, 91567 Herrieden. By car: B13 between Ansbach and Feuchtwangen. From Ansbach train station, take a bus or carpool. Parking spaces within walking distance of the Bürgerpark.
Kirchweih is completely free of charge. Rides, food, and drinks are charged according to the prices of the showmen and festival caterers.
