About Kirwa Hartenstein

The Kirchweih Hartenstein is a traditional Franconian Kirwa (village fair) in the Nürnberger Land district, organized by the Kulturverein Hartenstein e.V. The date is always around the first weekend of September. The focus is on the Kirwa with a festival tent, catering, live music, Kirchweihbaum (fairground maypole) and dancing, set against the backdrop of the Hersbrucker Schweiz and Frankenalb low mountain ranges. The Kulturverein is committed to a particularly lively, village-oriented festival culture in Hartenstein and also runs a year-round program of events.

Franconian Kirwa in the Hersbrucker Schweiz

The Kirchweih Hartenstein – or Kirwa in the local Franconian dialect – is a central local festival in the southern district of Nürnberger Land. The organizer is the dedicated Kulturverein Hartenstein e.V., which hosts the festival annually around the first weekend of September, ensuring that the Franconian Kirwa tradition remains alive – even in places where other Kirchweihen have disappeared in recent decades.

Program and Schedule

The Kirchweih follows the classic Middle Franconian pattern: raising the Kirchweihbaum, the festive procession, the festival tent with catering, live music and dancing in the evenings, a festive church service and brunch on Sunday, and the festival winding down on Monday evening. The Kulturverein provides the catering itself, with club members pitching in – setting up the festival tent, working in the kitchen, serving drinks, and providing service.

Hartenstein in the Nürnberger Land

Hartenstein is located in the southeastern district of Nürnberger Land, at the transition between the Hersbrucker Schweiz and the Frankenalb. The municipality is known for its Burgruine Hartenstein (Hartenstein Castle Ruins) and the surrounding rocky landscapes, which invite visitors to go hiking and climbing in the low mountain range. The region has a particularly high concentration of Kirchweihen in the Franconian calendar: many villages in the Hersbrucker Schweiz celebrate their own Kirwa during the same period.

Kulturverein as the Driving Force

The Kulturverein Hartenstein e.V. is the engine of cultural life in the town. In addition to the Kirwa, it organizes dance evenings, medieval camps, concerts, and its own May Day dance program. Anyone who has experienced a Hartenstein Kirwa knows the association's ethos: "Hartenstein celebrates – even if not everyone likes it." The festival is deliberately not a polished tourist event, but a local village festival with all the directness of Franconia.

What to Expect

  • Festival tent with catering by the Kulturverein
  • Kirchweihbaum and festive procession
  • Live music and dancing in the evenings
  • Festive church service and brunch on Kirwa Sunday
  • Franconian pub food and draft beer
  • Set in the low mountain landscape of Hersbrucker Schweiz and Frankenalb

Kirwa Hartenstein — edition 2026

In early September 2026, the Kulturverein Hartenstein e.V. will once again celebrate the traditional Hartenstein Kirwa in the town center. Several days of festival tent operation with Kirchweihbaum, live music, dancing, and catering by the association – set against the backdrop of the Hersbrucker Schweiz low mountain range in the Nürnberger Land district.

The Kirchweih Hartenstein 2026 is expected to take place on the first weekend of September (approximately September 4 to 8, 2026). The organizer is the Kulturverein Hartenstein e.V., which has been organizing the festival independently for years.

The exact date and detailed program – opening evening, invited bands, festive church service, dance evening, and closing – will be communicated by the association's management in due course on the website and social media channels.
