District Kirchweih in Nuremberg's Southeast with Maypole Raising
The Kirchweih Fischbach – in Franconian dialect Fischbacher Kärwa – is the district Kirchweih of the southeastern Nuremberg district of Fischbach. It is one of about 40 district Kärwen that the City of Nuremberg organizes annually, spread throughout a dense summer calendar: from May to September, there's always a Kärwa somewhere in Nuremberg.
The venue is the traditional Festplatz am Schlüsselstein in the heart of Fischbach. Here you'll find a beer tent, amusement rides (carousels, bumper cars, a small roller coaster section), shooting galleries, and candy stalls. The gastronomic program is managed by a festival host (in recent years, regularly the Schächtner family), who provides Franconian specialties, cold beer, and live music in the beer tent.
The identity-defining element of the Fischbacher Kärwa is the raising of the Kärwabaum on Saturday: an approximately 30-meter-long, decorated pole is erected upright over several hours of hard work, using only muscle power and the help of so-called Wischbäume. This technique is widespread in Middle Franconia, but it's a spectacle every year that attracts hundreds of spectators.
The typical program of a district Kärwa follows a set rhythm: Opening on Friday evening (beer tapping, first dance music), main Kärwa day on Saturday (Kärwabaum raising, festival operations in the evening), Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday (often with a church service), Family Day on Sunday afternoon, and winding down on Monday evening ('Auskärwa'). Bands and exact program details are published by the respective festival host and the SPD Nuremberg-Fischbach or the Citizens' Association Southeast shortly before the event.
Fischbach is a district in Nuremberg's southeast on the railway line to Regensburg/Munich (S-Bahn connection S2). The district is located on the edge of the Nürnberger Reichswald (Imperial Forest). The Kärwa benefits from this: many visitors arrive by S-Bahn. VAG Nürnberg regularly lists the Fischbacher Kärwa among its recommended summer destinations.
The Kirchweih Fischbach 2026 is confirmed in the official Kärwa calendar of the City of Nuremberg for Friday, July 31, to Monday, August 3, 2026. The venue is 'Zum Schlüsselstein 12' in the heart of the district. The full daily program with bands in the beer tent and special promotions will be published by the festival host and district associations before the date.
As in previous years, the raising of the Kärwabaum on Saturday will be a crowd-puller: an approximately 30-meter-long decorated pole is erected upright using only muscle power and Wischbäume – a spectacle that lasts several hours and attracts hundreds of spectators.
The exact band lineups and special promotions will be announced by the festival host before the event. As of Spring 2026, the following program levels are fixed:
