Kirchweih in the Donau-Ries
Fessenheim is one of the districts belonging to the municipality of Wechingen in the Donau-Ries district — thus in the extreme northwest corner of the administrative district of Swabia, at the historical interface between Swabian-Franconian culture. The Kirchweih is the main festival of the year here, a four-day event in mid-September that mobilizes club life, the parish, and the entire village community.
Four Days of Festivities
The Kirchweih traditionally runs from Friday to Monday. The Fessenheim Community Center serves as the central festival hall — with catering, a stage for music bands, and space for club meetings, which are part of the Kirchweih in the region.
Classic Program Elements of a Swabian-Bavarian Kirchweih
- Festival Opening on Friday evening, often with a beer tapping and musical start by the local band
- Saturday with festivities in the evening and dance music
- Sunday as the highlight with a festive church service, morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch, and a parade
- Monday as the conclusion with a morning pint and "Kirchweih-Montag" — a school holiday in many Donau-Ries towns
Donau-Ries as a Kirchweih Region
The Donau-Ries district cultivates a particularly dense Kirchweih culture. The Kirchweih in Fessenheim is part of a whole chain of local Kirchweihen that shape the late summer and early autumn program in the region around Nördlingen, Donauwörth, and Oettingen. The Catholic and Protestant populations celebrate on their respective patron saints' days — a vibrant expression of village identity.
