A Franconian Kärwa in the Maintal Valley

The Kirchweih Dampfach – often simply called "Kärwa" in Franconian – is the most important local festival in the Dampfach district of Wonfurt. For decades, the venue has been the sports centre of DJK Dampfach 1961 e.V. on Rüglersweg / Dorfstraße. For four days, the club grounds transform into a festival site with a marquee, stage, catering area, and playing field – the focal point of the entire village community.

Organiser: DJK Dampfach 1961

The organiser is DJK Dampfach 1961 e.V., the village's traditional football and sports club, located at Dorfstraße 57. DJK organises not only the Kärwa but also the well-known Dampfach Night Carnival Parade and several club festivals throughout the year. The club's youth work is directly integrated into the Kärwa programme – with youth games and a children's programme.

What makes the Kärwa special

The Kirchweih Dampfach follows the classic pattern of a four-day Franconian Kärwa:

  • Parade and beer tapping ceremony to kick things off
  • Raising of the Kerwasbaum (traditional maypole) as a central custom
  • Sports programme: youth matches, first team league match, friendly matches between districts
  • Culinary delights: Franconian sausages, steaks, smoked and grilled trout, schnitzel
  • Children's programme: face painting, balloon modelling, small games
  • Live music and dancing in the evenings in the marquee

Location in the Maintal Valley

Dampfach is located about 4 km northwest of Haßfurt on the right bank of the Main River in the fertile Maintal-Knetzgau basin. The municipality of Wonfurt (97539) includes the districts of Wonfurt, Steinsfeld, and Hainert, in addition to Dampfach. The Haßberge district is part of Lower Franconia (Bavaria) and is culturally deeply connected to Franconian Kärwa traditions – each village celebrates its own Kirchweih in sequence between spring and autumn.

A Club Kärwa

Unlike the large market fairs in the region (e.g., Hassfurter Kirchweih), Dampfach is purely a club Kärwa: no showmen, no commercial amusement rides – instead, village community, club life, and the preservation of customs through the voluntary work of DJK and its members. This is precisely what characterises the Kirchweih Dampfach.
