Traditional Ring Riding for Children in the Stork Village on the Treene
Ring Riding is a skill discipline deeply rooted in Schleswig-Holstein and Southern Denmark: at a gallop, riders try to hit a small ring hanging from a mount with their lance. Whoever collects the most rings by the end of the day becomes King or Queen – a title highly valued in the village.
The Reitergemeinschaft (RG) Bergenhusen e.V. organizes the Kinderringreiten every year in early summer – a day dedicated entirely to the young riders. Children and teenagers from Bergenhusen and the surrounding Stapelholm villages compete, often accompanied by parents, grandparents, and the entire village community. It's an accessible format: even beginners participating in a tournament for the first time are welcome.
The tournament takes place at the riding hall at Stuten 5 – the club grounds of the RG Bergenhusen. The Reitergemeinschaft is the organizer, with its long-time chairwoman Iris Thiemann shaping club life for years. While the children ride, club members provide refreshments: coffee and cake, grilled sausages, drinks. Those without their own horse are still welcome – as spectators.
Bergenhusen is located in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, on the edge of the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowland. The village is known nationwide as the Stork Village – more than twenty pairs of white storks nest on the village's houses and barns every summer. The Reitergemeinschaft Bergenhusen, with its around one hundred members, complements this natural attraction with active club life centered around equestrian sports – from beginner riding badges to the state amateur sports tournament in August.
The municipality of Bergenhusen officially announces the 2026 Kinderringreiten for June 7, 2026, taking place all day at the Reitergemeinschaft's riding hall at Stuten 5. As every year, the day is dedicated to young riders: children and teenagers compete against the ring at a gallop – a competition of skill and routine.
The exact program schedule will be announced by the Reitergemeinschaft Bergenhusen shortly before the date. Typically, there's an opening in the morning, competition groups by age and experience during the day, and an award ceremony in the late afternoon.
Detailed schedule and start lists will be published by the Reitergemeinschaft Bergenhusen in advance.
