The Kienholzfest Münchweiler an der Rodalb is a local and folk festival with a distinct historical connection. It has been celebrated every year at Whitsun since 1979 and commemorates the economic importance of Kienholz – the Palatinate term for resinous, fast-burning pine wood, which was an important commodity for the people of the Palatinate Forest for centuries.
Kienholz
Kienholz was obtained from the dense pine stands of the Palatinate Forest. Its high resin content made it the preferred fuel – both in the households of the region and in manufactories and small industries. It was chopped, stored in stacks, and used as light splinters in homes; pitch and tar were extracted from the resin. With the introduction of modern fuels, Kienholz lost its importance in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Kienholzfest keeps the memory of this past economic form alive.
Three Festival Days in the Bürgerpark
The festival has always taken place in the Bürgerpark Münchweiler an der Rodalb – a central festival site in the town center. The festival operations begin daily from 5 p.m. and last until late at night. The program includes live music (Palatinate dialect, cover bands, Schlager music), Palatinate specialties at the catering stands of the associations, a carousel, and shooting galleries for the younger visitors.
Münchweiler an der Rodalb
Münchweiler an der Rodalb, with just under 3,300 inhabitants, is located on the Rodalb, a tributary of the Schwarzbach, in the Südwestpfalz district. The town belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rodalben. Historically, the municipality was characterized by forestry, wood processing, and the shoe industry – economic sectors that were typical for West Palatinate as a whole. The Kienholzfest is the most important event in the local calendar and attracts visitors from all over the region.
