Kerwe Waldleiningen

The Kerwe Waldleiningen is the traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Palatinate village community Waldleiningen in the Verbandsgemeinde Hochspeyer in the district of Kaiserslautern. On August 30, 2026 (last Sunday in August), the main Kerwe day with a parade will take place; the festival weekend extends from Friday to Sunday in the classic Palatinate manner.

Waldleiningen in the Pfälzerwald

Waldleiningen is located in the middle of the Pfälzerwald Nature Park, in the Verbandsgemeinde Hochspeyer. The small community with a few hundred inhabitants maintains its village identity and is a starting point for hikes into the surrounding forest area. The location by the forest gives the Kerwe its special, quiet summer atmosphere.

Palatinate Kerwe Rhythm

The Waldleiningen Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe rhythm: opening on Friday evening with barrel tapping, dance evening on Saturday with live music or DJ, Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday morning with brass music, Kerwe parade on Sunday afternoon through the village streets, Kerwerede (Kerwe speech) and festival conclusion in the evening.

Kerweborsch and Customs

The Kerweborsch – unmarried young men of the village – are involved in the organizational aspects of the Kerwe. The Kerweparrer (Kerwe pastor) delivers the humorous and satirical Kerwerede on Sunday, which comments on the year's events humorously. The Kerwestrauß (Kerwe bouquet) is the symbol of the Kerwe and is erected on the opening day.

Festival Grounds and Club Life

The local clubs – sports club, fire department, and others – provide the festival tent, bar, and catering. Palatinate classics like Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), and fries are on the menu; draft beer and Palatinate wine accompany the festival weekend. On Sunday afternoon, the women of the parish serve coffee and cake.

Identity of a Forest Community

For Waldleiningen, the Kerwe is the social highlight of the year. Former residents return, families plan reunions, and the festival strengthens the community spirit of the small village nestled in the Palatinate Forest idyll.
