Information
Municipality of Sembach, sembach-online.de.
The Kerwe Sembach is the annual Kirchweih (church fair) of the Palatinate village of Sembach in the Verbandsgemeinde Enkenbach-Alsenborn in the Kaiserslautern district. On August 30, 2026 (the last Sunday in August), the main Kerwe day takes place; the festival weekend extends from Friday to Sunday in the classic Palatinate style.
Sembach – more than just the former Air Base
Sembach was long characterized by the former US Air Base Sembach, which was closed as an air force base in 1995. Today, the municipality is once again an independent Palatinate village community with around 1,000 inhabitants, whose club life shapes the communal identity. The Kerwe is the social highlight of the year.
Palatinate Kerwe Rhythm
The Sembach Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe rhythm: opening on Friday evening with barrel tapping, dance evenings with live music on the weekend, Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday morning with brass music, Kerwe parade on Sunday afternoon, and the festival's conclusion in the evening.
Kerweborsch and Customs
As in every Palatinate village, Kerweborsch (Kerwe lads), Kerweparrer (Kerwe pastor), and Kerwestrauß (Kerwe bouquet) characterize the festival. The humorous and satirical Kerwerede (Kerwe speech) on Sunday afternoon is the highlight of the festival and addresses village events, local anecdotes, and political events of the year.
Festival Grounds and Club Life
The local clubs – sports club, fire department, music club – provide the festival tent, bar, and catering. Palatinate classics such as Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Schwenkbraten (pan-fried meat), and fries are on the menu; draft beer and Palatinate wine accompany the festival weekend.
Meeting Point for the Village Community
For the residents of Sembach, the Kerwe is an important date: former residents return, families plan reunions, and the festival strengthens the community spirit among the clubs in this small but dedicated municipality.
