Traditional local Kerwe in the Wörth district of Schaidt with Palatinate customs
In the Palatinate, the Kerwe (Kirchweih) is more than just a folk festival: it is a symbol of identity for every village, every district, every parish. The Kerwe Schaidt follows the classic Palatinate pattern with the Kerwerede by the Kerweparrer (Kerwe pastor), who recites the local stories of the past year in rhyme, with a barrel tapping ceremony, Kerwetanz (Kerwe dance), Frühschoppen (morning pint), and four days of festival tent operations.
The Schaidt clubs jointly organize the Kerwe. The sports club, fire department, music club, carnival society, and church community provide stalls, beer gardens, and program items. This volunteer-based support is the backbone of all Palatinate Kerwen and ensures the family-friendly, multi-generational atmosphere that characterizes such festivals.
Palatinate cuisine characterizes the gastronomic offerings: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with meat and potatoes), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Sauerkraut (sour cabbage), fries, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), and desserts. Palatinate wine, Pilsner beer on tap, Schorle (mixed wine and soda), and lemonade at the drinks stand. A small carousel, shooting gallery, candy stall, and game stalls make the Kerwe an experience for children.
With around 1,700 inhabitants, Schaidt is one of the four districts of Wörth am Rhein, the others being Maximiliansau, Büchelberg, and the core town of Wörth. Each of these communities maintains its own festival traditions; the Schaidt Kerwe is one of the most traditional and is a well-attended event beyond the town limits.
