About Frankensteiner Kerwe

The Kerwe Frankenstein is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Palatinate village of Frankenstein in the Kaiserslautern district. The village, sharing its name with the famous novel character, simply derives its name from the medieval Frankenstein Castle above the village, whose ruins are among the oldest in the Palatinate. On the 3rd weekend of July 2026, the local community and its associations invite you to the traditional Kerwe. The highlight is the festive parade on Sunday through the village streets with decorated floats, associations, and music bands. Palatinate specialties, draft beer, and wine accompany the festival weekend – a typical Westrich Kerwe with a family atmosphere.

The Kerwe Frankenstein is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Palatinate village of Frankenstein in the Kaiserslautern district. On July 19, 2026 (Sunday of the 3rd weekend of July), the main Kerwe day with the parade will take place; the festival weekend extends from Friday to Sunday in the classic Palatinate style.

Frankenstein Castle

The community of Frankenstein owes its name to the medieval Frankenstein Castle, whose ruins tower high above the village. The castle is one of the oldest hilltop castles in the Palatinate and a popular hiking destination in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The community has no connection to the famous novel "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley – apart from the name; the Frankensteiners of the Palatinate chuckle about the confusion and use it humorously for tourism.

Kerwe Rhythm

The Palatinate Kerwe tradition follows a set schedule: Friday evening opening with tapping of the first keg and first dance evening, Saturday live music or DJ evening, Sunday morning Frühschoppen (morning pint) with brass music, Sunday afternoon Kerwe parade and Kerwerede (Kerwe speech), Sunday evening festival finale. This pattern also applies in Frankenstein – supported by the local associations.

Festive Parade on Sunday

The Kerwe parade on Sunday is the traditional highlight: Kerweborsch (Kerwe lads), local associations, music bands, and decorated floats parade through the village. The procession is accompanied by confetti, music, and "Helau" calls – Palatinate joie de vivre with roots in centuries-old Kirchweih tradition.

Palatinate Culinary Delights

Food and drinks are provided by the local associations: sports club, fire department, singing club. The menu includes Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), fries, and Schmalzgebäck (lard pastry). Palatinate wine and draft beer complement the offerings. On Sunday afternoon, there is coffee and cake from the association kitchens.

Palatinate Forest Scenery

Frankenstein is scenically located in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. Hiking trails lead to the castle ruins, the Speyerbach valley, and neighboring villages. The Kerwe is therefore also a meeting point for hiking groups and summer guests who want to experience the Palatinate way of life in the forest.
