One night, one ticket, around 50 museums – Kassel's cultural marathon themed "Participation"
The Kassel Museum Night is one of Kassel's cultural events that generates buzz even in the years between the documenta exhibitions. Since 1999, the documenta city has opened its museums, galleries, and cultural institutions late into the night every first Saturday in September. In 2025, the event attracted over 13,000 visitors amidst golden late summer weather – a scale that shows the format has long since outgrown its insider status.
The 2026 edition is themed "Participation". Specifically, this means low-threshold formats, accessible options, programs in multiple languages, and hands-on activities for children, families, and people who might not typically visit a museum. It's the answer to a question that preoccupies cultural institutions nationwide: How can institutional high culture be made accessible without trivializing it?
The joint ticket is the heart of the event. With a single wristband, you can explore the entire evening – from the Fridericianum (founded in 1779, one of Europe's oldest public museums) and the Hessisches Landesmuseum, with its 300,000-year history of North Hessian culture and nature, to the Museum of Sepulchral Culture, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. Added to this are the Natural History Museum in the Ottoneum, the Technology Museum, the Brothers Grimm Museum, the New Gallery with the exhibition "about: documenta", and Schloss Wilhelmshöhe – the list could go on for pages.
Alongside the major institutions, smaller spaces and galleries that are often overlooked in daily life also open their doors: the Kunstbalkon, one of Kassel's oldest artist galleries, the mimikri Galerie, the TOKONOMA as a platform for young art and club culture, as well as artist studios, off-spaces, and project galleries.
The central starting point is Friedrichsplatz, with the Fridericianum as its anchor. From there, paths lead to all parts of the city: to Karlsaue park, the city center, and up to Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. Special shuttles and "Rolling Rarities" – vintage car rides between museums – connect the venues and make the Museum Night itself a tour through urban Kassel.
What distinguishes the Museum Night from a regular late-night opening is the staging of public spaces: light installations on facades, DJ sets in courtyards, food trucks in front of entrances, and performances in squares. The city transforms, and even those who only manage to visit a fraction of the venues feel like they've participated in a city festival.

Check the program beforehand and plan your route – wandering aimlessly might get you to three venues, while planning can lead to seven or eight.
