About Karnevalszug Hachenburg-Altstadt

The Karnevalszug Hachenburg-Altstadt is one of the largest and most atmospheric carnival parades in the Westerwaldkreis. The baroque townscape of Hachenburg's Old Town, characterized by the restored Alter Markt (Old Market) and narrow streets, provides a dreamlike backdrop for the jester's performance on Carnival Sunday.

In 2026, the parade starts on Sunday, February 15th, at the jester's hour of 2:11 PM. Assembly and start are in Rheinstraße, from where the parade proceeds through the Old Town. Floats, walking groups, brass bands, guards, and clubs will make the historic center shake.

Hachenburg — the Baroque Pearl of the Westerwald

The town of Hachenburg, with its approximately 6,000 inhabitants, is the center of the northern Hachenburg administrative district. Its Old Town with the famous Alter Markt is considered one of the most beautiful in Rhineland-Palatinate. The baroque charm, preserved through decades of careful restoration, makes the town a popular destination and a charming setting for major events.

Carnival Tradition in the Lion City

Hachenburg is known not only for its famous Kirmes (fair) in August but also cultivates a vibrant Fastnacht (carnival) culture. The carnival parade on Sunday is one of the social highlights of the year, alongside the town's Kirmes, attracting visitors from all over the northern Westerwald.

The Parade Route Through the Old Town

The parade starts in Rheinstraße and moves through the Old Town. Floats with thematic mottos, often satirically commenting on local events and the zeitgeist, alternate with walking groups in elaborate costumes. Spielmannszüge (pipe and drum bands), Guggemusiken (street bands playing wind instruments), and Westerwald carnival bands set the rhythm. Guards and dance groups present their rehearsed programs.

Atmosphere and Thrown Items

The historic backdrop with a densely packed crowd in the narrow Old Town alleys creates a special atmosphere. Helauruf (a carnival cheer) and mood songs echo through the streets. Thrown items — Kamelle (sweets), candies, small promotional items, sometimes even small toys — are generously tossed into the crowd. Children with bags on the roadside are the secret main characters.

After the Parade

Afterward, participants and spectators disperse to the inns, bars, and clubhouses in the Old Town. The jester's revelry continues into the evening hours with mulled wine, beer, and Cologne classics.
