Northern Germany's largest street music festival at 16 venues in the city center
Since its inception, Buskers Braunschweig has quickly become one of the region's most atmospheric festivals. The format is simple and highly effective: Top-class street musicians from around the world are invited to perform in the city center for three days. There are no closed stages, no admission fees, no backstage areas—just a direct, unmediated encounter between artists and the audience on the city's streets and squares.
Spread across 16 venues in the city center—from Kohlmarkt and Burgplatz to small courtyards and alleys—around 30 to 40 acts will present their art. The spectrum ranges from folk and acoustic to jazz and world music, as well as experimental sound artists. In addition to musicians, acrobats, jugglers, magicians, stilt walkers, and other street art performers will also be present. The artists come from all over Europe and sometimes from overseas—despite its local character, Buskers Braunschweig is an internationally oriented festival.
The Buskers principle thrives on direct interaction between artists and the audience. Admission is free; artists are paid through voluntary donations (Hutgeld)—those who find a performance particularly touching or impressive throw a donation into the hat. This principle creates a special connection: the audience directly decides what is valued. Experience shows that donations are generous, and artists leave Braunschweig with fair compensation.
The musical program is complemented by street food, small bars, and the regular city center gastronomy. Over the three festival days, an atmosphere reminiscent of Southern European festival cities emerges: bustling squares, music from all corners, curious people of all generations moving from one performance to the next. Families, students, tourists, and locals form a colorful audience.
The 2026 edition continues the proven concept, utilizing the entire width of Braunschweig's city center. The international lineup will be published on the website shortly before the festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer.
