Merrymaking on the Middle Moselle
Klotten is picturesquely situated in a loop of the Moselle between Cochem and Treis-Karden, at the foot of the famous Coraidelstein Castle. The village is known for its wine production, its festival traditions, and not least for its vibrant carnival culture, which finds its secular highlight every year on Carnival Sunday in the traditional parade.
The parade starts punctually at 2:11 PM – the typical carnival time, which is adhered to to the second in almost all Rhenish parades. Floats, walking groups, carnival clubs, showgirls, marching bands, and music bands from Klotten and the neighboring towns march through the main street. The route leads through the historic village center, past the parish church and the festival grounds.
The Klotten floats are known for their loving design and their often biting local political wit. Topics from the Cochem administrative district, federal politics, and village life are skewered with self-irony and a wink. Showgirls and small show groups provide additional atmosphere along the route.
After the parade, the merrymaking continues in the pubs and the carnival club's hall. Celebrations with Moselle wine, beer, and carnival music go on late into the night. Those who want to experience the Rhenish carnival tradition beyond the big cities will find the right setting in Klotten.
The 2026 carnival parade starts punctually at 2:11 PM on Carnival Sunday. The assembly point and route will be announced by the Klotten Carnival Club a few weeks before the event. Arriving at least half an hour before the parade starts is recommended.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the Klotten Carnival Club in January. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Highlights: Floats with local political themes, showgirls and marching bands, carnival clubs from Klotten and neighboring towns, candy and confetti for children, carnival celebration in pubs and hall after the parade.
Free admission.
Getting there: By train to Cochem or Treis-Karden, then by bus. By car via the B49.
Admission: Free. Good viewing spots along the main street.
Tip: Costumes are encouraged – those who come in costume are a welcome part of the event in Moselle Carnival. Warm clothing recommended in February.
