Traditional Carnival sessions of GKGK 1846 in the Großer Kursaal with Men's Session and Grand Session
The sessions of the Großer Kreuznacher Gondelfahrer Karneval (GKGK 1846) are among the most traditional carnival events in Bad Kreuznach and the Nahe region. Founded in 1846, the GKGK is one of the oldest carnival clubs in Germany. The sessions take place in the historic Großer Kursaal of Bad Kreuznach and combine 'Büttenreden' (satirical speeches), dance troupes, musical performances, sketches, and jester's program in an impressive show sequence.
The 2026 carnival calendar includes the Men's Session on January 9th and the Grand Session on January 31st. Both events follow the classic session dramaturgy and are highlights of the pre-carnival season in Bad Kreuznach.
The Großer Kreuznacher Gondelfahrer Karneval was founded in 1846 and is one of the oldest organized carnival clubs in Germany. The name 'Gondelfahrer' (Gondola Riders) refers to the tradition of the 'Narren' (jesters), who conveyed their messages in symbolic gondolas or ships – a carnival metaphor popular in the 19th century. The club has maintained its tradition for over 175 years and significantly shapes Bad Kreuznach's carnival culture.
The 'Prunksitzung' (Grand Session) is the classic form of a pre-carnival event. Members and guests gather in the festively decorated hall, and the stage is filled with 'Büttenredner' (satirical speakers), dance troupes, male ballet, show acts, and music groups. The session president and the 'Elferrat' (council of eleven) lead through the program, which lasts several hours and is opened, closed, and repeatedly interrupted with 'Helau!' (a carnival cheer).
The Großer Kursaal Bad Kreuznach is the historic venue for Bad Kreuznach's carnival clubs. The Wilhelminian-era building in the spa district offers a festive setting with a stage, seating rows, and a gallery for several hundred guests. Tables are set with red-and-white or colorful decorations, and catering with wine, beer, and carnival specialties is provided.
Besides the GKGK 1846, other clubs shape Bad Kreuznach's carnival: The KC Fidele Wespe organizes the 'Wespen-Sitzungen', the Blaue Jungs vom MTV have their own session tradition, and the Weisse Fräck im VfL fill the Jahnhalle with their 'Prunksitzungen'. Together, they form a dense network of carnival events that enliven Bad Kreuznach each season.
The GKGK 1846 Grand Session in the 2026 season takes place on Saturday, January 31st, in the Großer Kursaal Bad Kreuznach. The club's Men's Session will be held on January 9, 2026. Both sessions feature satirical speakers, dance troupes, show acts, and music groups in the classic session format. Additional sessions from other carnival clubs complement the January/February program.
As in previous years, GKGK 1846 presents its program in proven tradition. Detailed performance schedules, seating arrangements, advance ticket sales dates, and catering options will be announced by the club in autumn/winter.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in winter. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
