Classic carnival session with 'Büttenrede' (recitation speeches), dance troupes, and Hermes House Band
The Karneval-Vereinigung der Rheinländer Braunschweig (KVR) was founded by carnival enthusiasts from the Rhineland who wanted to continue their tradition in the 'Löwenstadt' (Lion City). Today, it is one of Braunschweig's most important carnival associations and a key player in the Braunschweig Carnival, alongside the Komitee Braunschweiger Karneval. The annual 'Prunksitzung' is considered the social highlight of the carnival season.
The 'Prunksitzung' follows the classic Rhenish format: a ceremonial entry of the 'Elferrat' (council of eleven), 'Büttenreden' on local and national topics, performances by dance troupes in colorful uniforms, carnival hits, and sketches. The audience sits at long tables, drinks beer and Kölsch, sways, and sings along. For three to four hours, the stage is in the hands of performers who have been rehearsing for months – and guests from Cologne, Mainz, or Düsseldorf are always invited to complete the Rhenish atmosphere.
The highlight of the 2026 'Prunksitzung' is the performance by the Hermes House Band, the Dutch party band that rocks festival tents and carnival halls across Europe with carnival hits like 'Country Roads' or 'I Will Survive'. Their performance promises an energetic climax to the session – dancing on the chairs is guaranteed.
The 'Prunksitzung' on February 14, 2026, is part of the big Carnival weekend in Braunschweig. The following day, Sunday, February 15, the Schoduvel parade winds through the city center – the fourth-largest carnival parade in Germany. Attending both events offers the complete carnival weekend experience, from seated hall culture to an exuberant street party.
The KVR 'Prunksitzung' 2026 continues the long-standing tradition of Rhenish carnival culture in the 'Löwenstadt' (Lion City). Club life, tradition, and show level combine for an evening that captivates the audience for several hours.
