56th Rose Monday Parade through Gelsenkirchen-Erle under the motto 'From the Emscher to the Rhine — Carnival Invites Everyone'
The Gelsenkirchen Rose Monday Parade is the largest carnival parade in the northern Ruhr area. On Rose Monday, February 16, 2026, the parade starts at 2:30 PM in Gelsenkirchen-Erle and travels approximately 2,500 meters through the district. The route leads via Cranger Straße — the assembly area is near house number 290 — then along Willi-Brandt-Allee, Auguststraße, and Breitestraße.
The official motto of the 56th edition is 'From the Emscher to the Rhine — Carnival Invites Everyone'. It emphasizes that the Gelsenkirchen Carnival is a shared celebration of the Ruhr area and the Rhineland — from the Emscher (the Ruhr area river) to the Rhine. Float builders from the carnival societies will bring the motto to life on their magnificent floats.
Behind the parade and program is the Festkomitee Gelsenkirchener Karneval e.V. (Gelsenkirchen Carnival Committee), located at Horster Straße 330 in 45899 Gelsenkirchen. The FK coordinates the participating carnival societies (KGs), approves floats, organizes security and parade order — and has been the umbrella organization for Gelsenkirchen's carnival for decades.
The Rose Monday Parade is just the highlight of an entire carnival week. The 2026 program includes:
With around 260,000 inhabitants, Gelsenkirchen is one of the defining cities of the northern Ruhr area. Carnival here has its own tradition, often described as 'Ruhr Carnival' — less influenced by Catholicism than in Cologne or Düsseldorf, but more colorful and political than in the Rhenish strongholds of carnival. Districts like Erle, Buer, Horst, Resse, and Schalke each maintain their own carnival clubs — with their guards, dancers, and float-building teams.
The assembly area opens at 1 PM — those who want the best spots along the route should arrive early. Cranger Straße near house number 290 offers a good view of the end of the parade and the arriving groups. Auguststraße and Breitestraße are the main thoroughfares with large crowds. For families with small children, the quieter beginning of the route is best — more candy (Kamelle) is often thrown here than in the dense main crowd.
Six days of carnival in Gelsenkirchen — from Weiberfastnacht on Feb 12 with street carnival and town hall storming, to the grand Rose Monday Parade on Feb 16 in Erle. In between, there are sessions, balls, and the children's parade in Buer on Feb 15. A complete list of events can be found at karneval-ge.de.
Watching is free.
By train: Take the S-Bahn S2 or RE to Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof (main station), then take tram 301/302 or a bus towards Erle. By car: Take the A2 motorway, exit Gelsenkirchen-Buer, then follow signs towards Erle — there will be extensive road closures on Rose Monday, so arriving early is recommended.
