The little Karlsruhe Mess' — Volksfest on the Messplatz
Twice a year, Karlsruhe upholds one of its oldest Volksfest traditions: the Karlsruhe Mess'. While the Autumn Mess' in October/November is the large edition, the Spring Festival of Showmen — also known as the “little Mess'" — is the smaller, more compact version. Both take place on the Messplatz at Durlacher Allee, a 7-hectare fairground in eastern Karlsruhe with its own tram stop.
The Spring Festival 2026 features the classics of the Southern German showmen scene: BreakDance, Autoscooter, Ferris wheel with views of the city center, Wilde Maus, haunted house, carousels for children, shooting galleries, dart games, throwing games. New for 2026 is “Diablos Residenz" — a three-story haunted house, built in 2025, which will be at the Karlsruhe Mess' for the first time in 2026. Spooky-beautiful stage show included.
The Spring Festival opens daily at 2:00 PM and closes at 11:00 PM. On Sundays and public holidays, it opens at 12:00 PM. Please note: Friday, April 3rd, 2026, is closed (Good Friday, traditional quiet day). Family Day is Thursday, April 2nd, 2026 — showmen offer reduced prices on this day (often 50% discount for children on many rides, occasionally discounts for adults too).
Karlsruhe boasts a rich Volksfest culture — in addition to the Mess' in spring and autumn, there's also the Karlsruhe Stadtfest in October, the Karlsruhe Oktoberfest, and the street food festivals of the year. The Spring Festival at the Messplatz marks the start of the open-air season: when the first warm days arrive, when the Ferris wheel turns against the Karlsruhe evening sky and the showmen bring the Mess' atmosphere back to life, it's clear — spring has arrived.
The Spring Festival 2026 runs for 10 days. Opening on Saturday, March 28th, closing on Easter Monday, April 6th. Good Friday, April 3rd, is traditionally a day of rest.
