«World of Childhood» — a six-day festival with Pēteris Vasks as Composer in Residence
In just a few years, the Kammermusikfest Sylt has established itself as one of the most prestigious chamber music festivals on the German coast. The concept is as simple as it is unique: the entire island is the festival venue. Concerts are held across the island in five locations on Sylt — from the medieval Friesian Church of St. Severin in Keitum to venues in Westerland, Kampen, Wenningstedt, and all the way to List in the north. Each venue has its own acoustic character; travelling between locations on the island is part of the festival experience.
The 2026 program is dedicated to the theme «World of Childhood». The artistic director, cellist Claude Frochaux, curates a program featuring fairy tales, lullabies, fantasy journeys, and magical creatures. The repertoire spans from Baroque to modern times, from Schumann's Kinderszenen and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition to contemporary works.
2026 is a special Vasks year: the Latvian composer celebrates his 80th birthday. The Kammermusikfest Sylt honors him as Composer in Residence — a new commission, created in cooperation with a Dutch festival, will have its world premiere on Sylt. Vasks is one of the most significant contemporary composers in Northeast Europe, known for his spiritually charged musical language that blends nature, lament, and hope.
The festival brings together musicians from 9+ countries — including the Netherlands, Spain, Ukraine, Israel, Chile, and Japan. Featured artists include violinists Daniel Rowland, Noa Wildschut, and Cecilia Ziano, as well as pianist Natacha Kudritskaya. This cosmopolitan mix is typical of modern chamber music festivals.
Sylt is the largest of the North Frisian Islands, located in the North Frisia district in the far north of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Known as a top German holiday destination, the island has cultivated a second profile as a cultural island in recent years — with the chamber music festival and a growing gallery scene, especially in Keitum, the old Frisian captain's village. The combination of mudflats, dunes, concerts, and studios makes a summer festival on Sylt a high-quality travel experience.
Six days, five locations: The Kammermusikfest Sylt 2026 is the most ambitious chamber music event on the North German coast. The program is dedicated to works related to childhood — from Schumann's Kinderszenen, Tchaikovsky's Children's Album, and Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' to Berio's folk songs and contemporary works. The repertoire focuses on pieces exploring «fairy tales, lullabies, fantasy journeys, and magical creatures».
