What is a Festkommers?

The Festkommers is a traditional festive event that originally stemmed from student customs and is now an integral part of major association anniversaries, marksmen's festivals, and fire brigade celebrations. A Festkommers typically consists of festive speeches, honors, communal singing of traditional songs, toasts, and a convivial gathering. Unlike pure dance or folk festival events, the Festkommers is solemn and dignified, symbolizing the recognition of tradition and voluntary service.

Double Anniversary 2026

The occasion for the Festkommers on August 28, 2026, is the double 75th anniversary of the two main associations in Groß Varlingen: the Groß Varlingen Local Fire Brigade and the Groß Varlingen Marksmen's Association. The fact that two associations in one village are celebrating their 75th anniversary simultaneously is an extraordinary constellation and an expression of the vibrant association landscape in Groß Varlingen.

Festkommers Program

The focus will be on speeches by the association chairmen, the mayor of the municipality of Stolzenau, the mayor of the collective municipality of Mittelweser, and representatives of the district of Nienburg/Weser. Honors for long-standing members, communal singing of association and local songs, toasts to the associations and the village, a festive reception with sparkling wine and snacks. The event is usually manageable and is aimed at members and invited guests.

The Festkommers kicks off the celebration chain for the anniversary year: August 30 Marksmen's Festival (75 years Marksmen's Association), October 3 Oktoberfest with the party band Bubingas, October 4 Harvest Festival. These multiple celebration occasions underscore the central role of the two associations for the identity and social life of Groß Varlingen.
