Traditional market around St. John's Day on Tiengen's market square — Waldshut district
The Johannismarkt — named after St. John's Day (June 24) — is one of three annual markets in the Tiengen district of the town of Waldshut-Tiengen. Markets are the traditional form of sales in historical town markets — continuing for centuries from medieval market regulations to the present day. In 2026, the Johannismarkt will take place on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, on Tiengen's market square.
At a market, stalls are spread along the main axes of the old town with a wide assortment: textiles (clothing, fabrics, bedding, household goods), leather goods, tools and household appliances, jewelry and fashion accessories, regional food products (cheese, sausage, honey, spirits), plants and flowers, toys. In addition, food stalls — sausages, crêpes, sweets — characterize the market atmosphere. The market is a classic meeting point for trade and social interaction for the population of the Waldshut district.
Tiengen is the northern district of Waldshut-Tiengen, a twin city with almost 25,000 inhabitants in the Waldshut district in the state of Baden-Württemberg, directly on the Swiss border on the High Rhine. The district has its own historic old town with Renaissance buildings, a castle, and a church, and maintains its own market square and market dates — a rare constellation in German town life. The three Tiengen markets (Johannismarkt, Michaelismarkt, Novembermarkt) are fixed dates in the calendar of the southern Baden population.
Tiengen's market square, surrounded by burgher houses and historic facades, forms the spatial center of the market. The stalls spread out from the market square into the adjoining alleys. The market has a classic character — open-air, no festival tent, a market day from morning to late afternoon — and is visited by locals from the Waldshut district and neighboring Switzerland.
The city of Waldshut-Tiengen is organizing the Johannismarkt 2026 in its usual format — a one-day event on Tiengen's market square, with stalls spread along the central old town alleys. The market traders come from the southern Baden region, neighboring Switzerland, and northern Baden; the assortment covers the classic market spectrum.
The market opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon. In the vicinity of the stalls, food vendors offer sausages, cheese platters, crêpes, sweets — a visit to the market invites a leisurely stroll through the old town, complemented by the gastronomy of Tiengen's old town establishments.
Free admission. Market goods at prevailing market prices. Food at usual market prices (sausage approx. €3.50–€4.50, crêpes €4–€6).
