Traditional market on the weekend before St. John's Day with classic car meeting and church service
St. John's Day — June 24th — has been one of the most important feast days in the Christian calendar for centuries. It commemorates the birth of John the Baptist and coincides with the summer solstice, giving it both religious and folk significance. Many Palatinate communities hold St. John's markets or St. John's bonfires around this time. In Schönenberg-Kübelberg, the Johannismarkt is traditionally celebrated on the weekend before June 24th and is closely linked to the patronal festival of the St. John's Chapel.
The program combines three elements that shape the atmosphere of the Johannismarkt. A festive church service in the St. John's Chapel usually opens the day, recalling the religious roots of the festival. Afterwards, the market opens, stretching along the central streets of the town center, offering market stalls with artisanal products, regional food items, early summer plants, and household goods. A special highlight is the classic car meeting, which attracts many visitors: classic vehicles, motorcycles, and tractors are presented, enthusiasts exchange ideas, and for many visitors, it's an occasion to see each other again after a long time.
The Johannismarkt also includes a Sunday with open shops in the businesses in the town center. Fashion, sports, and stationery stores open their doors on Sunday afternoon, taking advantage of the traditional market day to usher in the early summer season. Local gastronomy complements the offerings with summer menus, ice cream, coffee and cake, as well as hearty Palatinate classics.
The Johannismarkt is a classic meeting point for the regional population. Families from the entire Kusel district, former residents, and tourists from neighboring Saarland use the Sunday to stroll through the market, visit the classic car meeting, shop in the stores, and then dine at local restaurants.
With June 21st, the 2026 Johannismarkt is close to the summer solstice, the astronomical turning point of the year. The municipality again expects a strong turnout, especially from families from the Kusel district as well as the neighboring Saarpfalz district. The classic car meeting has become a unique attraction over the years, drawing enthusiasts of classic vehicles from all over West Palatinate.
