Traditional Johannismarkt with music, gastronomy, and musical fireworks in the Dahner Felsenland
The Johannismarkt dates back to one of the most important feast days in the Catholic church year: June 24th, the birthday of John the Baptist. In rural regions like the Westpfalz, this day was traditionally associated with markets, bonfires, and festivals that heralded the high summer. Bundenthal upholds this tradition with a three-day market and folk festival on the weekend around St. John's Day.
Bundenthal is located in the southern part of the Dahner Felsenland, nestled among the sandstone rocks of the Wasgau and near the French border. The region is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges and is considered one of Germany's most scenic hiking areas. The Johannismarkt takes advantage of this location: it serves as both a meeting point for the village community and a popular stop for hikers and tourists.
The program follows the proven structure of a Palatinate village festival: Friday evening festival opening with the first concert, Saturday all-day market with catering and evening concert, Sunday musical brunch, afternoon program with regional bands, and in the evening, the musical fireworks as the final highlight. Catering is provided by local clubs.
As with all village festivals in the Palatinate, the Johannismarkt is supported by Bundenthal's clubs – from the fire department and sports club to the music club and heritage society. Proceeds from catering and market stalls benefit local club life. This circular economy is the foundation of Palatinate festival culture.
The Johannismarkt is organized by the municipality of Bundenthal together with local clubs. Catering is provided by the clubs, and the proceeds benefit club life. Current program details will be published in the pfalz.de event calendar.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring and early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: three days of festival activities with fireworks as the conclusion.
