About Johannismarkt

The Johannismarkt in Bundenthal is a traditional market and folk festival held on the last weekend of June, named after the feast day of St. John the Baptist (June 24th). For three days, the village center transforms into a festival area with catering stands, market stalls, a stage for live music, and open-air seating. The highlight and traditional conclusion is the grand musical fireworks display on Sunday evening. The festival combines Palatinate market tradition with modern festival operations and is a fixed date in the Dahner Felsenland calendar.

Johannismarkt – An Old Festival Day

The Johannismarkt dates back to one of the most important feast days in the Catholic church year: June 24th, the birthday of John the Baptist. In rural regions like the Westpfalz, this day was traditionally associated with markets, bonfires, and festivals that heralded the high summer. Bundenthal upholds this tradition with a three-day market and folk festival on the weekend around St. John's Day.

In the Heart of the Dahner Felsenland

Bundenthal is located in the southern part of the Dahner Felsenland, nestled among the sandstone rocks of the Wasgau and near the French border. The region is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges and is considered one of Germany's most scenic hiking areas. The Johannismarkt takes advantage of this location: it serves as both a meeting point for the village community and a popular stop for hikers and tourists.

Three Days of Market, Music, and Fireworks

The program follows the proven structure of a Palatinate village festival: Friday evening festival opening with the first concert, Saturday all-day market with catering and evening concert, Sunday musical brunch, afternoon program with regional bands, and in the evening, the musical fireworks as the final highlight. Catering is provided by local clubs.

Club Life as the Driving Force

As with all village festivals in the Palatinate, the Johannismarkt is supported by Bundenthal's clubs – from the fire department and sports club to the music club and heritage society. Proceeds from catering and market stalls benefit local club life. This circular economy is the foundation of Palatinate festival culture.

Johannismarkt — edition 2026
