Three Days of Bavarian Forest in the Festival Tent
For over half a century, the Innernzell Volksfest has been a fixture on the event calendar of the Freyung-Grafenau district. Since 1973, DJK-SSV Innernzell e.V. has invited visitors to three days of festival tent atmosphere in mid-August at the festival grounds – a format that has hardly changed and is precisely why it is so beloved.
Innernzell is located in the Freyung-Grafenau district, right in the middle of the Sonnenwald holiday region, a southern foreland of the Bavarian Forest. Here, rolling hills, forests, and farms shape the landscape. The Volksfest brings the entire region together: clubs from neighboring towns like Grattersdorf, Schöllnach, Hutthurm, and Saldenburg participate, and brass bands come from the surrounding area.
Traditional Bavarian atmosphere reigns in the festival tent: long wooden benches, brass music from the Innernzell Brass Band, Hutthurm beer on tap, roast chicken, grilled fish on a stick, and roast pork. There is also a small amusement park with carousels and rides. Three days, three moods: Friday is young and loud, Saturday is family-friendly, and Sunday is the official ceremony with authorities and farmers.
The Volksfest opens on Friday evening with a concert by the brass band at the church square, followed by the parade of local clubs into the festival tent. Saturday begins with a communal lunch in the tent, followed by the seniors' afternoon and a long festival tent night. Sunday, traditionally the "Day of Businesses, Authorities, Farmers, and Citizens," concludes with a festive closing and a show band.
The Innernzell Volksfest is not a huge spectacle – not an Oktoberfest with millions of guests. It is a village festival in the best sense: manageable, friendly, with short distances and familiar faces. That's exactly why it has been running successfully since 1973 without interruption.
The 50th edition of the Innernzell Volksfest on August 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2026, marks the round birthday of the festival, which has been held continuously since 1973. The complete detailed program will be published shortly before the festival on the DJK-SSV Innernzell website. Based on experience, it follows the proven three-day schedule with a concert, parade, seniors' afternoon, and show bands.
