The Kolk – Heart of Horumersiel

The Kolk of Horumersiel is more than just a picturesque harbor basin: it is the core of the identity of a place that cherishes its history as a Sielhafen (lock harbor) at the transition between marshland and mudflats to this day. Thatched houses and brick buildings frame the calm water; in the summer months, it is bustling with tourists, while in winter, silence descends upon the ensemble. The Kolkleuchten pick up on this image and complement it with an artistic layer of light.

Light staging in a pre-Christmas mood

Various light installations – lanterns, illuminated boats, reflections in the water of the Kolk, and targeted lighting of the historic facades – transform the area into an immersive light composition. The concept aims for a contemplative, atmospheric mood, not a loud spectacle. Those strolling through the Kolk should be able to pause and reflect.

Mulled Wine and Culinary Delights

Local gastronomy and Wangerland Touristik offer mulled wine, warm drinks, and small specialties. Those wishing to combine the event with a restaurant visit will find several establishments offering Frisian cuisine around the Kolk – reservations recommended.

Date and Background

The Kolkleuchten take place annually in December. The exact date and time will be announced promptly by Wangerland Touristik GmbH. Admission is free – the event is considered a gift to locals and winter guests. It complements the Wangerländer Deichleuchten (dike illumination) event on New Year's Eve with another, more intimate light offering.
