About Horchheim Kerwe

The Horchheim Kerwe is the traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Worms district of Horchheim and a central date in the district's festival calendar. In 2026, it will be celebrated from Monday, August 10th, to Thursday, August 13th – four days of festivities on the market square and festival meadow. The organizer is the Brauchtumsverein Horchheim e.V. (Tradition Association Horchheim), founded in 2016, which has since been responsible for the Rhenish Hessian tradition festivals of the district. The program includes classic Kerwe elements: festive church service, raising of the Kerwebaum (festival tree), presentation of the Kerwepaar (festival couple), festival tent with live music, a small amusement park, a morning pint on Sunday, and the traditional Kerwe-Begraben (burial of the Kerwe) on the last day. A real Volksfest experience in the southern part of Worms.

Horchheim – a traditional Worms district

Worms-Horchheim is located in the southern part of the city and, with around 3,500 inhabitants, is an independent district with a distinct identity. Its own parish church, its own associations, its own traditional customs – Horchheim functions in many aspects like an independent village within the large city of Worms. The Kerwe is one of the district's most important identity events.

The Brauchtumsverein Horchheim since 2016

The Brauchtumsverein Horchheim e.V. was founded in 2016 to put the Rhenish Hessian tradition festivals of the district on an organized footing. Today, it is responsible for the Horchheim Carnival (FastNightsUmzug), the Maibaum (Maypole), the Wine Festival in May, and the Kerwe in August. The association pools the energies of young and old Horchheim residents and ensures that the district's traditions remain vibrant.

Classic Rhenish Hessian Kerwe elements

The Horchheim Kerwe follows the classic Rhenish Hessian pattern: It opens on Monday evening (or traditionally already the weekend before) with the raising of the Kerwebaum – a tree decorated with colorful ribbons, bows, and symbolic objects. The Kerwepaar – a young couple from the district – is presented and represents the Kerwe throughout the festival days. A festive church service, a festival tent with live music, a small amusement park, and the traditional Kerwe-Begraben on the last day form the dramatic framework.

Festival tent and amusement park

The festival tent is the focal point of the evening's events. Live bands and DJs provide the musical accompaniment, and classic festival tent dishes and beer are served. The small amusement park with carousels, bumper cars, and snack stands complements the offerings, especially for families with children.

District identity and conviviality

The Kerwe is more than a Volksfest – it is an identity ritual for the district. Generations meet here, former Horchheim residents return, and friendships are maintained. A tradition that keeps village life alive in the big city.
