Hocketse — Swabian word, Swabian concept

The Hocketse is a Swabian invention: a club festival that doesn't target tourists but rather the residents of the district or village. Tables and benches are set up on the street, the club provides catering, and a stage offers music — mostly brass music. Those who come, stay. The Musikverein Bernhausen cultivates exactly this format every year in the summer on Rosenstraße.

Musikverein as the organizer

The Musikverein Bernhausen e.V. is one of the central clubs in the Filderstadt district. The Hocketse is one of its most important own events — it finances instruments, sheet music, and youth work. In addition to the main band, the youth and junior ensembles also perform on stage, supplemented by friendly clubs from the Filder region.

Bernhausen, with around 18,000 inhabitants, is the largest district of Filderstadt (Esslingen district, state of Baden-Württemberg). Filderstadt is located directly south of Stuttgart on the Filder plain — known for asparagus, Filderkraut, and Stuttgart Airport. The Bernhausen district has a strong club scene with the music club, the sports club, and the fire department as central players.

What makes the Hocketse special

In contrast to large city festivals, the Hocketse is small, local, and genuine. There is sausage, fries, sauerkraut, beer, Swabian wine, and sliced cheese. The music is brass music, with polkas, waltzes, and occasional modern pieces. Anyone who has experienced a Swabian Hocketse knows why Swabians defend the concept — it is the exact opposite of event culture, and that's precisely what makes it valuable.
