Traditional Schützenfest with roots in the 16th century — every three years in Wennigsen am Deister
Anyone visiting the Historisches Freischießen Wennigsen experiences not just a Schützenfest, but a historical event of exceptional depth. The festival's roots reach back to the late 16th century: in 1574, Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel granted the community of Wennigsen the privilege of a Freischießen — a royal right that only a few places received at that time. Over the centuries, this historical privilege has evolved into the Historisches Freischießen celebrated today, which, with its 450-year roots, is one of Lower Saxony's most traditional Schützenfeste.
Unlike most Schützenfeste, which take place annually, the Historisches Freischießen is celebrated only every three years. This rarity makes the festival a special occasion — not a routine date in the annual calendar, but a highlight that the people of Wennigsen prepare for over years. The organizing association, Historisches Freischießen Wennigsen e.V., has around 150 active members who are intensively involved in the preparation phase.
The festival sequence follows a dense, symbolic choreography. On Saturday, June 20, 2026, a festive ringing of bells at 6 p.m. will open the festival, accompanied by six cannon shots and a parade to the festival grounds. Sunday, June 21, is the main festival day: ceremonies begin as early as 6 a.m. — the early morning program is part of the Freischießen tradition and gives the day a sacred character. At 3 p.m., the grand parade through Wennigsen follows, in which the active marksmen, friendly associations, music bands, and the Wennigsen population participate. On Wednesday, June 24, the festival concludes with the Schinkenkloppen — a traditional program item where hams are distributed in a particularly unusual way.
The festival is accessible to visitors free of charge — a conscious decision that corresponds to the historical significance of the Freischießen as a folk and community festival. The festival is financed by the Schaffer fundraising collection, an old tradition where the Schaffers (a type of festival host or organizer) collect contributions from the public in advance. This financing method, reminiscent of medieval times, underscores the festival's historical roots.
From June 20 to 23, 2026 (with conclusion on June 24), the next edition of the Historisches Freischießen Wennigsen will take place — recurring every three years, with roots in the 16th century. Four days of historical symbolism characterize the festival at the foot of the Deister hills.
Updates will be published by the association at historisches-freischiessen.de.
