Ten days of Franconian Kirchweih in Weihersbach — beer gardens under old trees, amusement rides, live music, and a closing fireworks display
The Herzogenaurach Sommerkirchweih is one of the most traditional folk festivals in the Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt. For ten days, the Weihersbach grounds — situated among beautiful old trees — become a festival mile. Beer gardens invite convivial gatherings, showmen provide amusement rides for all age groups, and Franconian beer along with regional specialties are, of course, part of the experience.
The Kirchweih traditionally opens on Friday evening at 6 PM with the parade of the fire department and the ceremonial beer tapping by the mayor. On Saturday, the traditional Kerwabaum parade with local groups winds through the town, and Sunday features the festival service. On the opening weekend, personalities who have rendered outstanding services in the social sector are also honored.
The Sommerkirchweih has something for every generation: The seniors' afternoon on Wednesday is accompanied by live big band music, while the children's and family afternoon on Thursday offers discounts from showmen and restaurateurs. On stage, various bands create a lively atmosphere over the ten days — celebrations continue late into the evening under the open sky.
The grand finale on the last evening is a spectacular fireworks display over the Weihersbach. With its blend of Franconian beer culture, family-friendliness, and deeply rooted traditions, the Sommerkirchweih is a firm fixture in Herzogenaurach's event calendar, attracting visitors from the entire Nuremberg-Erlangen metropolitan region.
The 2026 edition lasts ten days, from July 3 to 12, on the Weihersbach grounds. It opens on Friday evening at 6 PM with the parade of the fire department and the ceremonial beer tapping by the mayor. Over the ten days, there will be beer gardens under old trees, amusement rides for all age groups, Franconian beer and specialties, and various bands on stage. Fixed program points include the Kerwabaum parade on Saturday, the festival service on Sunday, the seniors' afternoon accompanied by live big band music on Wednesday, the children's and family afternoon with discounts on Thursday, and the grand closing fireworks on the last evening.
Note: The specific band lineup and exact times for 2026 will be announced by the City of Herzogenaurach in advance.
