Traditional autumn fair with Thanksgiving procession on the first Sunday in October
The Sittensen Herbstmarkt is the counterpart to the spring fair and marks the transition from the open-air season to autumn and winter. For four days, showmen transform Sittensen's market square into a lively entertainment area with carousels, game stalls, bumper cars, shooting galleries, and food stands.
A special feature of the Sittensen Herbstmarkt is the Thanksgiving procession on the first Sunday in October. Farming families from the municipality, rural women's associations, clubs, church communities, and schools parade through Sittensen with decorated harvest wagons, harvest offerings, marching bands, and traditional costume groups. The parade combines Christian Thanksgiving customs with village festival culture.
Carousels, bumper cars, children's rides, game stalls, and shooting galleries line the market square. Food stands offer bratwurst, fries, crêpes, candied almonds, cotton candy, and sweets. Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks are also available. The atmosphere is autumnal and festive, with fairy lights and illumination in the evenings.
The event kicks off on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon with the initial market openings. Friday and Saturday feature full market operations with highlights in the evenings. Sunday is dedicated to the Thanksgiving procession and family activities. The festival concludes on Sunday evening.
The Herbstmarkt is the social highlight of autumn in the Sittensen municipality. Families use the weekend for outings, school classes visit the market on Friday afternoon, and clubs meet at the refreshment stands. Its central location in the town center makes visiting particularly easy.
From the Wednesday afternoon opening to Saturday evening, the market dominates Sittensen's town center. The evenings with illumination are particularly atmospheric.
The Thanksgiving procession combines Christian customs with a folk festival atmosphere and is an expression of the agricultural tradition of the municipality.
