Autumn wine tavern of the Meddersheim vintners in the wine village on the Nahe
The Herbst-Weinfest (Autumn Wine Festival) in Meddersheim celebrates the end of the grape harvest in one of the traditional wine villages of the Nahe region. In October, the Meddersheim vintners transform their courtyards and the communal wine village into a traditional wine tavern (Straußwirtschaft) landscape: current vintage wines, Federweißer (new wine), regional specialties, and the familiar atmosphere of a wine-growing village characterize the festive days.
Meddersheim is located in the Nahe valley between Bad Sobernheim and Monzingen and is one of the classic wine-growing locations of the Middle Nahe. The vineyards around the village produce elegant Riesling, Burgundy varieties, and a robust Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The Herbst-Weinfest is the highlight of the wine village season and the prelude to the quiet winter season in the vineyard.
The Weindorf Meddersheim is an initiative by several Meddersheim wine estates that have joined forces for joint marketing and to revitalize the village as a wine destination. Tasting events, courtyard taverns, wine festivals, and community activities are organized together. The Herbst-Weinfest is one of the core events.
The autumn date brings a special charm: fresh Federweißer (new wine) from the recently completed grape harvest is served, alongside the latest vintage wines. Federweißer – also called “Neuer Wein” or “Sauser” – is a partially fermented must, lightly sparkling, with striking freshness and a short season. It is classically paired with onion cake (Zwiebelkuchen).
Typical autumn specialties of the Nahe region accompany the wine festivals: wood-fired onion cake, Flammkuchen, vintner's snacks (Winzervesper), bratwurst, pumpkin soup, game dishes, and Federweißer spritzer. The Meddersheim vintners offer their own specialties depending on the courtyard – no two courtyards are alike, which is part of the charm of hopping between them.
Meddersheim, with just under 1,700 inhabitants, is one of the traditional wine-growing communities on the Nahe. Its location on the river, surrounded by steep vineyard slopes, shapes the village's appearance. The Romanesque parish church and the old courtyards of the wine-growing families are worth seeing. Bad Sobernheim, the next larger town, is about five kilometers downstream.
The Herbst-Weinfest in the Meddersheim wine village in 2026 will take place in October. The exact date will be confirmed by the Meddersheim vintners on weindorf-meddersheim.de.
