Six weeks of Christmas spirit in the Old Town — from the Advent opening to the end of the year
What sets the Weihnachtsstadt Lüneburg apart from many other Christmas markets is its diversity. Instead of a single large market, the entire old town is staged: district markets with their own character are created in several squares, while decorated alleys, illuminated shop windows, and artistic light installations create a continuous Christmas atmosphere in between. Strolling through Lüneburg, you wander from one market to the next, discovering the historic substance of the Hanseatic city from a new perspective.
At the center is the large Christmas market on the square in front of the town hall. With festively decorated wooden stalls, a large fir tree, and the famous Lüneburg Mettwurst (a type of sausage), it is one of the classics. On the square Am Sande, a second market with its own character complements it — the focus here is on arts and crafts, gastronomy, and family offerings. In addition, there are smaller specialty markets such as the Marleen Stövchen, the historic Christ market around St. Michaelis Church, the Winterzauber at Bergström, and Christmas experience locations around the Heinrich-Heine-Haus and the Salzplatz.
The brick architecture of Lüneburg's old town — shaped by the wealth from medieval salt trade — is particularly impressive during the Christmas season. Elaborate light installations over the alleys, illuminated towers of the main churches St. Johannis, St. Nicolai, and St. Michaelis, as well as Christmas concerts and services complement the market experience. Special accents are set by Advent music in the churches, tower brass bands in the market square, and the traditional town hall carillon, which plays Christmas melodies during Advent.
Lüneburg Marketing GmbH coordinates the Weihnachtsstadt with all participating market operators, associations, and stakeholders. In 2026, the event will run from November 19th to December 30th, 2026. The individual markets each have their own opening hours and durations — an overview is maintained on the official website www.weihnachtsstadt-lueneburg.de.
The Weihnachtsstadt 2026 extends its concept with a particularly long season — from Bußtag (Day of Repentance) to the day before New Year's Eve. During this time, daily program items alternate: Advent concerts in the brick churches, tower brass bands, performances by school choirs and children's choirs on the market stages, storytelling for families, special programs on the four Advent weekends. The exact dates and programs of the individual markets will be published on the official website and social media channels of Lüneburg Marketing GmbH.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
