Saxon wine culture and international street theatre in Altkötzschenbroda
The Herbst- und Weinfest Radebeul is unique in Germany: it combines a classic Saxon wine festival with an international street theatre festival. Both components have developed in parallel since 1993 – the wine festival as a showcase for Radebeul's vintners, and the XXIX. International Wandertheaterfestival as a meeting place for ensembles from all over Europe.
The venue is the historic village green of Altkötzschenbroda, one of the most beautiful preserved village greens in Saxony. With its half-timbered houses, courtyards, and the Friedenskirche (Church of Peace), it forms an atmospheric backdrop for wine tastings, concerts, and theatre performances. The vintners open their courtyards, and theatre ensembles take over streets, squares, and improvised stages.
Radebeul is located in the Saxony wine-growing region, Germany's northeasternmost wine region. Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Goldriesling, Traminer, and Spätburgunder ripen on the steep slopes of the Lößnitz. The Radebeul vintners – including the Sächsisches Staatsweingut Schloss Wackerbarth, Hoflößnitz, and smaller family businesses – present their vintages directly from the producer.
Parallel to the wine festival, the XXIX. International Wandertheaterfestival takes place – ensembles from Spain, Italy, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, and many other countries bring street theatre, acrobatics, puppetry, and mobile performances to Altkötzschenbroda. Family-friendly performances during the day, sophisticated evening programmes in the late afternoon.
Radebeul is located in the Meißen district (AGS 14627), in the state of Saxony, just outside the gates of the state capital Dresden. It takes twenty minutes by S-Bahn to reach the festival grounds – the wine festival has been one of Saxony's most visited autumn events for decades.
The 2026 festival theme puts love at the centre – as a leitmotif for the theatre performances, for wine tasting pairings, and for the staging of the festival grounds. Radebeul vintners present their best vintages in the courtyards along the village green; live music accompanies the tastings.
The theatre festival, in its 29th edition, runs parallel to the wine festival. Ensembles from various European countries bring street theatre, mobile performances, puppetry, and acrobatics to Altkötzschenbroda – family-friendly performances during the day, sophisticated evening formats in the late afternoon.
By S-Bahn from Dresden Hauptbahnhof (S1, direction Meißen, stop Radebeul-Kötzschenbroda). By car via the A4 (exit Dresden-Altstadt) or the B6. Parking nearby is limited – the train is strongly recommended.
Admission to the festival grounds is mostly free. Wine tokens are sold for tastings; day tickets are available at radebeul.de/weinfest and at the festival entrance. Special events may require tickets.
Plan your visit on a weekday or during the day on Sunday – the weekend is very crowded. A wine tasting directly with the vintners in their courtyards is a highlight of the festival.
