Academic Symposium in the Juleum with Lectures, Discussions, and Festive Service — Theme 2026: Paths Out of War
Since 1995, the Helmstedt University Days have stood for sophisticated academic engagement with socio-politically relevant topics. Originating from the project "Boundless — Paths to the Neighbor," they build a bridge between the history of the university town of Helmstedt and current European issues.
Founded by Duke Julius in 1576, the Academia Julia was one of the most important universities in Protestant Northern Germany for over 230 years. The Juleum, built between 1592 and 1612, housed the Auditorium Maximum as well as the university library. Today, the monumental Renaissance building serves as Helmstedt's cultural center and is the main venue for the University Days.
The 32nd edition is dedicated to the question of how societies find their way back from war to peace. Historians, political scientists, theologians, and practitioners from diplomatic and humanitarian professions illuminate peace treaties, memory culture, and reconstruction from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The series of events follows a proven structure. Thursday evening begins with the traditional university cinema, offering a cinematic introduction to the year's theme. Friday and Saturday are reserved for academic lectures and discussion rounds in the Juleum. The event concludes on Sunday with a festive service in the collegiate church of St. Stephani.
The University Days are embedded in the overarching project "Boundless — Paths to the Neighbor," which cultivates Helmstedt's centuries-old connection to Central and Eastern Europe. During the Cold War, Helmstedt was located directly on the inner-German border; today, the town sees itself as a place of dialogue.
Unlike purely academic conferences, the University Days are deliberately aimed at a broad audience. The lectures are presented in an understandable manner, and the discussions are open to questions from the audience. This creates a forum where science and citizens can engage in dialogue on equal footing.
The exact program for 2026, including lecture titles and speaker lists, will be published by the organizer in the summer of 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
