Three dates of Bengal fire at the castle with grand fireworks over the Neckar
The Heidelberg Castle Illumination is more than a tourist fireworks display — it is a staged remembrance. During the Palatinate Wars of Succession in 1689 and 1693, the French Sun King Louis XIV had Heidelberg Castle set ablaze twice. Since 1815, this dark chapter has been artistically reenacted on several summer nights: Bengal fires set the entire castle facade in a deep red, making it appear as if the complex is once again in flames. At the same time, the staging references the wedding celebration in 1613 between Elector Frederick V and Elizabeth Stuart — Heidelberg celebrated back then with a famous wedding fireworks display.
Immediately after the start of the castle illumination at 10:15 PM, a brilliant fireworks display launches from the banks of the Neckar — lasting 15 to 20 minutes, utilizing the full spectrum of modern pyrotechnics. The images are among the most photographed motifs in Germany: the castle illuminated in fiery red in the background, the grand fireworks in the foreground, reflecting in the Neckar — a composition that has given its Heidelberg icon to thousands of postcards and travel guide pages.
The best view is from the Philosopher's Walk (Philosophenweg) in the Neuenheim district on the other side of the Neckar — a viewing terrace offering the full panorama of the castle + fireworks. The Theodor Heuss Bridge also provides excellent views (and is closed during the illumination). On the castle side, the Kornmarkt (craft market from 11 AM to 8 PM), the Nepomuk Terrace (beer garden with live music 6 PM–11 PM), and Ziegelhäuser Straße are recommended. Concerts in the Heiliggeistkirche start from 6:15 PM.
In 2026, the castle illuminations will take place on Saturday, June 6, Saturday, July 11, and Saturday, September 5. The organizer is Heidelberg Marketing GmbH; up to 60,000 visitors are expected per date. The summer date in July is regularly the most visited — school holidays, mild weather, and full hotels in the entire region coincide. During the spectacle, the B 37 along the Neckar is closed, and the Theodor Heuss Bridge and parts of the Old Town become pedestrian zones. Arrival by bus, train, and on foot is strongly recommended.
The 2026 Castle Illuminations will take place on three Saturday evenings: June 6, July 11, and September 5, 2026, each starting at 10:15 PM. The organizer is Heidelberg Marketing GmbH. Up to 60,000 visitors are expected per date — spectators from Heidelberg, the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, and international tourism.
The spectacle itself lasts 15 to 20 minutes: First, Bengal fires ignite on Heidelberg Castle, bathing the entire castle facade in glowing red — a staging that recalls the fires set by Louis XIV's troops in 1689 and 1693. Then, a brilliant fireworks display launches from the banks of the Neckar, reflecting in the river.
