Traditional harvest festival celebrating the Heidekartoffel (heath potato) with a harvest thanksgiving service, potato feast, and regional market
The Heidekartoffel is a culinary landmark of the Lüneburger Heide. Particularly aromatic varieties, which have been part of the regional food culture for generations, thrive in the sandy soils around Bad Bevensen. The Heidekartoffelfest honours this agricultural tradition with a weekend full of events, spanning from the spiritual harvest thanksgiving to the convivial main festival.
The festive opening is the harvest thanksgiving service in the Dreikönigskirche in the heart of the spa town. The church is decorated with harvest offerings, and farmers from the region bring the fruits of their labour to the altar. It is a moment of reflection on the close connection between agriculture and community that has grown in the Lüneburger Heide for centuries.
On Saturday evening, the restaurant Anno1825 invites you to the traditional potato feast. The menu includes suckling pig and a wide variety of potato specialties – from classic boiled potatoes to potato pancakes and hearty stews. This culinary highlight attracts locals and guests of the spa town alike and has been a fixed date in the event calendar for years.
On Sunday, the centre of Bad Bevensen transforms into a large regional market from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Producers from the heath present potatoes of all varieties, along with sausage and cheese specialties, honey, jams, baked goods, and handicrafts. Live music accompanies the festival, and demonstrations on potato processing – from peeling to cooking – provide insights into old craft techniques.
Restaurateurs from Bad Bevensen and the surrounding area offer a wide range of potato dishes: potato fritters with apple sauce, heath potato soup, fried potatoes with bacon, or the regional specialty with buttermilk. The festival is thus also a culinary showcase, highlighting the diversity of rural cuisine between Lüneburg and Uelzen.
With its thermal baths and health facilities, Bad Bevensen is a recognized spa resort. The Heidekartoffelfest represents the other side of the town: down-to-earth, rurally rooted, and close to the people. It is a meeting point for the heath population and, at the same time, allows spa guests to experience the regional identity in a likeable way.
The Heidekartoffelfest 2026 confirms its proven two-day structure: a quiet, spiritual start on Saturday with a harvest thanksgiving service and communal meal, followed by a lively main festival on Sunday in the town centre. The official event pages of Bad Bevensen and the Lüneburger Heide confirm the dates.
