Medieval festival in the castle ruins in the Westerzgebirge
Hartenstein in the Zwickau district, at the transition between the Erzgebirge foothills and the Westerzgebirge, is home to one of Saxony's most impressive castle ruins. The complex dates back to the 12th century, was the seat of the Schönburg counts, and has survived several fires and wars. Today, a support association looks after its substance, and the ruins serve as a venue for several historical events throughout the year.
The Heer- und Ritterlager (Army and Knights' Camp) is one of the most intensive formats: For a weekend, the complex transforms into an accessible medieval camp. Knights in contemporary armor — many members of reenactment groups from Saxony, Thuringia, and beyond — set up their tents in the castle courtyard, demonstrate tournament techniques, present crafts (blacksmiths, potters, leatherworkers, bowyers), and put together a historical market offering. Visitors gain an impression that goes beyond the typical Sunday visit.
Unlike commercial medieval markets, the proceeds here are explicitly used for the restoration of the castle ruins' gatehouse. Thus, visiting also contributes to monument preservation — an argument that the association gladly uses in its external communications and which attracts a consciously engaged audience.
Hartenstein is located on the edge of the "Montanregion Erzgebirge" UNESCO World Heritage site, nestled in a wooded landscape with viewpoints over the upper Erzgebirge. Visitors to the knights' camp can combine their stay with hikes in the surrounding area, a visit to Schneeberg (St. Wolfgang), or an exploration of the mining exhibitions in Aue.
The support association for the castle ruins organizes the Heer- und Ritterlager as one of about six major festival formats in its annual program. Reenactment groups from Saxony and neighboring countries occupy the castle courtyard and surrounding area with camp tents, craft stations, and tournament grounds.
