Atmospheric district Christmas market in southern Mainz on the 3rd Advent weekend
Hechtsheim, with over 17,000 inhabitants, is one of Mainz's largest districts, yet it retains its village character between the old town center, vineyards on Hechtsheim Hill, and the recreational area around the Gonsbachtal Adventure Park. When the Hechtsheim Christmas Market opens on the third weekend of Advent, this sense of community spirit shines in its most beautiful form. Initiated and supported by the Hechtsheim Association Ring, the umbrella organization of local clubs, the market has been the convivial highlight of the Advent season for Hechtsheim residents for many years and an attraction for visitors from surrounding Mainz districts and nearby Rheinhessen.
Wooden stalls, decorated fir trees, and light arches line the market square and the main street. Catering is entirely in the hands of local associations: sports clubs serve mulled wine and non-alcoholic hot drinks, the fire department provides bratwurst and fries, parish communities offer cakes and cookies, and kindergartens and schools sell homemade goods for their class funds. Stalls run by craftswomen from Hechtsheim and the surrounding area present Advent wreaths, nativity figures, knitwear, jewelry, ceramics, and honey—many gifts are purchased directly from the maker here.
A diverse program unfolds on a small stage in the center of the market. Choirs from Hechtsheim parishes, the men's singing club, the brass choir, and the Mainzer Hofsänger (Mainz Court Singers) set the mood with Advent carols. Children from local primary schools and daycare centers present nativity plays and songs. The highlight for the youngest visitors is the visit of St. Nicholas, who distributes gifts on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the program is musically dominated by brass ensembles and string quartets.
The Hechtsheim Christmas Market sees itself as a conscious counterpoint to large commercial Christmas markets: here, the focus is on neighborhood, volunteer engagement, regional products, and the promotion of local club activities. The proceeds go towards the youth work of the participating clubs. Visitors to Hechtsheim often combine their market visit with a stroll through the old town center and a glass of Hechtsheim wine in the Rheinhessen style.
The Hechtsheim Christmas Market 2026 offers a coordinated program of catering, crafts, and stage performances on both days. Saturday starts at 2 PM with the official opening at the stage platform, followed by choir performances and the visit of St. Nicholas in the late afternoon. In the evening, live music and mulled wine service create a relaxed atmosphere until 10 PM. Sunday opens at 12 PM and is family-friendly: brass choirs, children's nativity plays, and community Advent singing characterize the afternoon, before the market concludes at 6 PM. Stall operators include local sports clubs, the Hechtsheim fire department, the Catholic and Protestant parishes, the Mainzer Hofsänger choir, daycare centers, and regional craftspeople and beekeepers.
