Beach instead of cinema hall
The Harlesieler Filmnächte offer a very special cinema experience: cinema under the open sky, with the sound of the sea in the background and summer wind on your skin. From July 28th to 30th, 2026, the beach of Harlesiel will be transformed into an open-air cinema hall for three summer evenings. A large screen will be set up on the beach, beach chairs and blankets will serve as seating, and the setting sun will provide the natural pre-show staging.
Harlesiel – a beach with special character
Harlesiel, a district of Wittmund, is one of the most charming seaside resorts on the East Frisian coast. The quiet, family-friendly beach with beach chairs, children's playgrounds, and culinary offerings provides an ideal backdrop for a summer film event. Unlike larger North Sea resorts, Harlesiel has retained its quiet, village-like character – which shapes the intimate atmosphere of the Filmnächte.
Program concept for the three evenings
The program combines mainstream and arthouse cinema:
- During the day: Family program on the beach with games and interactive activities
- In the evening: Live music before the film starts, followed by the film screening
- Film screening: Starts after dark, usually between 9:30 PM and 10 PM
The exact film program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in advance – traditionally with a mix of current audience hits, classics, and occasional family films.
Summer atmosphere as the main star
What makes the Filmnächte special is not primarily the film selection, but the atmosphere: beach, sea, summer evening, sunset, campfire romance. Those who watch the films do so in a setting that creates memories – a cinema experience that indoor cinemas cannot offer.
Weather and flexibility
Open-air cinema is weather-dependent. In case of heavy rain, screenings will be postponed or relocated – current information at carolinensiel.de and nordseebad-carolinensiel-harlesiel.de. Most dates will take place as planned in the stable summer weather of East Frisia.
