Medieval market with camp life and castle festival in the setting of the late medieval Hardegsen Castle
The Hardegsen Medieval Market and the associated Castle Festival utilize the unique backdrop of Hardegsen Castle, a late medieval fortress from the 14th century. The castle was built by Heinrich the Wondrous and was one of the most important fortifications in the southern Lower Saxony region for centuries. Today, it has been restored and serves as the setting for the medieval event.
At the medieval market, craftsmen and traders from the medieval historical spectrum present their skills and products: blacksmiths, potters, basket weavers, leatherworkers, candlemakers, felt makers, turners, and woodcarvers. The stalls are designed in the style of medieval market architecture, and the traders wear historically inspired garments.
Performers with hurdy-gurdies, bagpipes, drums, and shawms provide the musical accompaniment. Jugglers, fire artists, archers, and acting groups perform shows several times a day. Thus, the market combines market activities with theatrical elements and interactive opportunities.
A medieval camp with historically inspired tents offers an insight into the daily life of the era. Residents in period costumes are available for questions and demonstrate old craft techniques. Families with children, in particular, are involved in the activities with hands-on stations, archery, and costume workshops.
Parallel to the medieval market, the Castle Festival takes place – a civic festival that involves the local population in the event. Bratwurst stands, beer gardens, food, and social meeting points make the event a combined market, folk, and family festival.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition, once again utilizing the unique castle backdrop. The program will be coordinated in advance by the city of Hardegsen and the medieval market agency.
