Jewish Advent Market in the Museum's Glass Courtyard
The Jewish Museum Berlin at Lindenstraße 9–14 (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, Kreuzberg locality) is one of Germany's most visited museums. The old building of the museum houses a glass courtyard that has been used as a covered market space for the Hanukkah Market for many years. Unlike the predominantly Christian Christmas markets in the city center, this event focuses on the Jewish festival tradition of Hanukkah – the Festival of Lights, celebrated for eight days during the winter months.
The market brings together stalls from artisans, jewelry designers, publishers, specialty food producers, and artists from Israel and Germany. The program includes: handmade Chanukkiyot (nine-branched menorahs), Judaica, jewelry with Hebrew calligraphy, kosher sweets and baked goods, books and comics on Jewish history and contemporary life, toys, and care and design products from Tel Aviv and Berlin. In addition, there are Klezmer concerts and readings in the glass courtyard, workshops on oil pressing (a nod to the Hanukkah legend about the Temple oil), and an extensive children's program – puppet shows, craft stations, guided family activities.
The Hanukkah Market is a deliberate alternative to the crowded city center markets and is aimed equally at Jewish families, teachers and educators, interested individuals, and Berliners who want to engage with contemporary Jewish culture. Free admission. U-Bahn lines U1/U6 Hallesches Tor are a five-minute walk away.
In 2026, the Jewish Museum Berlin will again host the traditional Hanukkah Market in the glass courtyard of its old building. The date is based on the Jewish calendar and typically falls in November/December; the museum will publish the exact weekend on jmberlin.de. Market admission is free, and a curated supporting program of concerts, readings, workshops, and family events accompanies the exhibitors' space.
The exact 2026 program will be communicated by the Jewish Museum before the opening. Recurring program segments:
