Over 400-year-old autumn fair with historic piglet market in the southern Osnabrück region
The Hagener Kirmes dates back to an old market charter and is one of the oldest folk festivals in the Osnabrück region. What originally began as a livestock and goods market has evolved over the centuries into a showman's fair – without losing its historical heritage. The Ferkelmarkt, traditionally held on Saturday mornings, is now one of the few remaining events of its kind in Lower Saxony and regularly attracts farmers from the wider region.
The Ferkelmarkt on Saturday morning is the historical heart of the Hagener Kirmes. Piglets are offered for sale in a designated market area — a traditional practice that represents both custom and living agricultural practice. Visitors can witness the old market scene up close. In the background, showmen are already setting up their carousels and food stalls, allowing both formats to be combined over a single weekend.
Following the Ferkelmarkt, the actual fair weekend begins with showman attractions, food stalls, catering tents, and family entertainment. The Kirmes traditionally opens on Saturday and extends through the extended autumn school holiday until Monday, October 5, 2026. The combination of the historic market and the modern showman's fair makes the Hagener Kirmes a special festival format in the Lower Saxony folk festival calendar.
The historical heart of the festival is the Ferkelmarkt on Saturday morning, October 3, 2026. Piglets are traded in the designated market area — a custom that is preserved in only a few places in Germany and has been practiced in Hagen for centuries.
Following the Ferkelmarkt, the showman's fair opens its operations. Saturday and Sunday are dedicated to the festival weekend, while Monday offers a quieter conclusion with family attractions.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Ferkelmarkt on Saturday morning, Kirmes opening on Saturday midday, full operation on the weekend, and Family Day on Monday.
