The Iffezheim racecourse in the municipality of Iffezheim, Baden-Württemberg, near Baden-Baden, is the most important German horse racing center. First opened in 1858, the facility has developed into an elegant competitor to Ascot, Longchamp, and Royal Ascot. The annual “Große Woche” (Big Week) at the end of August / beginning of September is the undisputed highlight of the German horse racing calendar — and at the same time one of Baden-Württemberg's major social events, comparable to Munich's Oktoberfest in its mix of sport, fashion, and conviviality.
Five Race Days with Six Group Races
The Große Woche 2026 spans five race days: Saturday 29.08., Sunday 30.08., Tuesday 1.09. (new “After Work Race Day” replacing the traditional Wednesday date), Saturday 5.09., and Sunday 6.09. Scheduled are six Group races (the highest classification in Europe, comparable to the English Group Races), three Listed Races, and two BBAG auction races. The Grand Prizes — Großer Preis von Baden, Goldene Peitsche, Großer Preis der Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe — are among the most prestigious horse races in Europe and attract top international horses from England, Ireland, France, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates.
Style Challenge, Ladies Day, and Children's World
Beyond pure horse racing, the Große Woche offers an elaborate accompanying program: The Style Challenge is a fashion competition for the best-dressed visitors — with similar cultural significance to the Royal Ascot style event. The Ladies Day places a similar emphasis. The colorful Children's World with bouncy castles, carousels, and hands-on activities makes the race day family-friendly. Shopping tents showcase fashion, jewelry, and lifestyle brands. After-Race Parties extend the race day into the evening with live music and DJ sets.
Cultural Dimension and Social Significance
The Große Woche is not just a sports event — it is a social ritual with historical dimension. Since the mid-19th century, the South German economic elite, international horse breeders, fashion enthusiasts, and tourists from nearby Baden-Baden and Alsace have gathered here.
