About Gonsenheimer Rekrutenumzug

The Gonsenheimer Rekrutenumzug is one of the most original Carnival traditions in the Mainz city area. While the large Mainz Rose Monday parade dominates events in the city center, the "recruits" of the Gonsenheimer guards and Carnival clubs parade through their northwestern district in the afternoon. The highlight is the symbolic storming of the Gonsenheimer town hall – a unique custom in Mainz that vividly demonstrates the jesters' takeover of power in the district. The parade starts at 2:22 PM and is a deliberately district-focused, family-friendly alternative to the city center spectacle.

Gonsenheim and its Carnival Tradition

Mainz-Gonsenheim, with around 25,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest districts of Mainz and home to several active Carnival clubs. Gonsenheim Carnival has maintained its own distinct profile over decades: instead of simply joining the large city center parades, the Gonsenheimer guards parade through their own district on Rose Monday – with their own symbolism, their own self-image, and the famous town hall storming as the highlight.

Recruit Parade: The Jesters Take Power

The term "Rekrutenumzug" (recruit parade) refers to its original meaning: the young "recruits" of the guards – that is, the new active members of the season – present themselves to the public and march with the seasoned guardsmen and guardswomen through the district. At the end point, the symbolic storming of the Gonsenheimer town hall takes place: the jesters take over power in the district for the remaining days of the campaign, and the district administrator symbolically hands over the key to the Carnivalists. This is a visible traditional act that draws many families and district friends specifically to the town hall.

Parade Order and Atmosphere

Participating are the Gonsenheimer guards, friendly Mainz Carnival clubs, marching bands, musical groups, floats with references to district and national events, and children's groups. The parade moves at a leisurely pace through the town center, with plenty of opportunity for throwing material, audience interaction, and guard dances at the major street intersections. Unlike the mass events in Mainz city center, there is an almost neighborly atmosphere here.

Family-Friendly and Public Transport Accessible

Starting at 2:22 PM, the Gonsenheimer parade is ideal for families who want to experience the Rose Monday parade in the city center in the morning and return to their district in the afternoon. Gonsenheim is accessible from all over the city via the Mainzelbahn and bus lines; travel by car is not recommended due to route closures.

Gonsenheimer Rekrutenumzug — edition 2026

The Gonsenheimer Rekrutenumzug will take place in 2026 on Rose Monday, February 16, starting at 2:22 PM in the Mainz district of Gonsenheim. Guards, Carnival clubs, floats, marching bands, and children's groups will parade through the town center. The highlight is the symbolic storming of the Gonsenheimer town hall, with which the jesters take over Carnival power in the district. Admission is free. The afternoon timing is deliberately chosen so that participants and spectators can still experience the big Mainz Rose Monday parade in the city center in the morning.

The exact program for 2026 and the order of the parade groups will be published by the Gonsenheimer Carnival clubs shortly before Carnival. The campaign motto "100 Years of Mainzer Hofsänger" presides over the entire Mainz Carnival 2026 and will also shape the Gonsenheimer floats and dance performances.

Programme Gonsenheimer Rekrutenumzug 2026
